Paris Plages 2026: Family Days by the Seine and Canal from the 9th
Every summer, Paris heads to the water. From mid-July to the end of August, Paris Plages turns the banks of the Seine and the Bassin de la Villette into places to relax and swim for free. For families staying in the 9th arrondissement, it is a chance to cool off without leaving the city. Here is how to make the most of it.
At a glance. Paris Plages brings the riverbanks to life from mid-July to the end of August. Enjoy free swimming in the Seine (the most central spot is Bras Marie in the 4th arrondissement) and at the Bassin de la Villette (with family swimming areas). Both are accessible by metro from the 9th arrondissement. Check the day’s opening times on paris.fr.
Your guide to Paris Plages
From mid-July to the end of August, Paris Plages brings deckchairs, parasols, games and activities to the banks of the Seine. Entry is free, the atmosphere is family-friendly, and you can come for anything from sunbathing to a game of pétanque or a children’s workshop. From the 9th arrondissement, the riverbanks are easy to reach by metro for a summer break in the heart of Paris.
Swimming in the Seine
One of the highlights of recent summers is being able to swim in the Seine again. In 2026, three free, supervised swimming sites open from 4 July to the end of August. The most central is Bras Marie, opposite the Île Saint-Louis. Swimming sessions depend on the day’s water quality, so check the City of Paris website before setting off. With children, aim for the morning, when it is less busy.
Swimming by the canal at the Bassin de la Villette
For an outing that is even more suited to families, head to the Bassin de la Villette. During Paris Plages, free, supervised swimming pools are set up here, with areas suitable for children and a full programme of water-based activities around the canal. It is one of the most popular summer spots for families and is easy to reach by metro from the 9th arrondissement.
An aparthotel: a convenient base for families
With children, space and independence make all the difference. Cadet Residence, an aparthotel at 7 rue Cadet in the 9th arrondissement, offers accommodation with a kitchenette and a living area, so you can prepare a snack or a picnic for the beach and dry your swimwear. The central, well-connected Cadet neighbourhood puts both the Seine and the canal within reach by metro.
